This is Houston – Right in Århus

Body

“This is Houston”; one of the partners shouted as he entered the office this morning. On the photo below you might be able to see why he was inspired to outburst this announcement. However, let me be the first to tell you Seismonaut is not trying to create a command centre in the middle of Århus. So what is up with all the screens you might ask? Well, this whole set up is part of a user centred research project we are running these days at Seismonaut. In the early spring Seismonaut was asked to collaborate with CABI (Danish National Centre for Employment Initiatives) in the creation of new user driven knowledge exchange initiatives in and between the 90 Danish jobcentres. Instead of just coming up with great ideas out of the blue, it is crucial to figure out how the current exchange of knowledge is flowing in and between the job centres. So my colleague Peter and I packed the car with video recording equipment and went out and about in Denmark to visit some of the job centres and talk with the employees. It was highly rewarding to meet the employees “in the field” and a great opportunity to understand the everyday life there. In the end we returned with a great huge amount of rewarding recorded material – and loads of stories and insights. So, back to Houston; all the screens in the room on the photo is where we look through hours and hours of video material. In our hunt for insights the wall is one of the most important tools. By putting it all up on the wall we release ourselves from the laptop and collaboratively identify patterns and important issues in the material as it unfolds. So even though this isn’t Houston it is still the point from where we navigate in a huge amount of complex material.

David Graff says:

I like your metaphor!

As I understand it, you being Houston equals the job centres with the entire universe, while cabi is, well, something like the first man on the moon.

Might I add: This is a small step for a man, but a great step for humanity…

The main difference is, I suppose, that you and cabi do not only explore and map the universe – the quest is to activate the stars, eliminate the black holes and strengthen the deep structures of correspondance already there in the universe.
