Future Health Care Scenarios

By 2020 the New Aarhus University Hospital will be completed in a northern suburb of Aarhus, Denmark. Seismonaut joined the consortium Curavita led by Arkitema to produce a proposal for delivering the blueprints. Our primary task was to develop a method for evaluating new technologies and to develop possible future scenarios for user-oriented applications based on IT and new technologies. All of the scenario topics were aiming at optimizing patient comfort as well as hospital operations.

Some of the emerging technologies we described were disposable smart dust to assist the cleaning service in detecting bacteria concentrations in patient rooms. We also described how intelligent buildings will be able to sense the presence of users and respond autonomously according to recorded user-profiles.

Other important technologies we worked into the scenarios were wireless technologies supporting ad hoc patient communities and wall-sized video conferencing connecting patients with their families at home. The Curavita Consortium’s proposal was selected as the second-best.
